Come and share our open secret
We may have had put up with yet another damp spring and early summer but at least this means that the Secret Garden at Bank House Cafe, in Axbridge, Somerset, is more jungly than ever. The stream is in full flow and the range of vegetation within the confines of the ancient stone walls is truly amazing. So a great place to forget the woes of the world with a glass of wine or local cider, a relaxed lunch or tea and cakes.
And whatever the weather, we'll always make you welcome you in our big red room, wth its tall windows, and in the more informal inglenook room.
Another good review
We recently received another good review to top the great welcome we received in our first year of trading. Karen Daniel wrote in Somerset Life: “Bank House Café is situated on the ground floor of a tall, primrose-yellow Georgian house in a corner of the historic square of Axbridge and next to the parish church. It provides excellent café facilities for anyone seeking a light lunch, delicious tea or scrumptious dinner. In summer, one can enjoy food and drink in a lush secret garden to the sound of a gently running stream which flows beneath Axbridge’s main square. More formal meals can be taken in the beautifully proportioned, high-ceilinged dining room, painted in the jewelled hue of plush red Russian velvet.”
We couldn't have said it better ourselves. The Sunday Times has said “home cooking doesn’t come more homely than this.” And one writer has compared Bank House to “a superb but relaxed French or Italian country restaurant, sitting in the shadow of the church in a corner of the town’s marvellous medieval square.”
Another reviewer described a visit that had just the right effect:“This was a lunch that made me grin from ear to ear all the way home. Proper food -cooked with integrity by people who care.”

History, heritage and outstanding natural beauty
The Square in Axbridge has been a focal point for the surrounding area for centuries. It was given a royal town charter more than five hundred years ago. Today the town may strike most people as looking more like a village, but it's a still a hub for a superb visitor destination. Rising up behind the cafe are the Mendip hills, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They offer first-classwalking, cycling, riding, rock-climbing and even caving and potholing. The Mendips give fabulous views over the Somerset Levels, one of the hidden gems of the South-West.
There are beautiful things to see all over Somerset - and Axbridge is no exception. But there are world-class attractions just a few miles away - the extraordinary dramatic landscape of Cheddar Gorge, the magnificent cathedral at Wells, the Unesco World Heritage city of Bath and the big but friendly city of Bristol.
