The Place

Outstanding Natural Beauty

The setting for Bank House Café is The Square, with its medieval houses fronted by Georgian facades - a combination which makes Axbridge a historical and architectural gem.

Axbridge - The placeAxbridge is a convenient starting point for walkers and cyclists, and the small town has several of its own attractions – scores of listed buildings, a very special church (in the classic Somerset perpendicular style) and the magnificent King John’s Hunting Lodge. Despite its name, this is a merchant’s house from around 1500. It is now home to the charming and idiosyncratic town museum.

Immediately to the north of The Square rise the limestone hills of the Mendips, an officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To the south are the Somerset Levels, one of the most extensive and magnificent stretches of peat-rich wetland in Britain, rich in biodiversity. Close by is the spectacular setting of Cheddar Gorge. Wells –England’s smallest city, with its spectacular cathedral- is within ten miles, and the magical and mystical town of Glastonbury a little further.
